Studies on the Corrosion Performance for Steel Embedded in Fly Ash Blended Concrete
The present investigation it to study the corrosion performance of fly ash blended cement concrete in chloride-contaminated
environments by various electrochemical and non-electrochemical techniques. The chloride binding ability at the optimum
replacement level of fly ash was also studied
Hatchery Techniques and Culture of the Sea-cucumber Holothuria scabra
In India the Beche-de-mer industry is very ancient one. Till
recently the whole fishery was supported only by a single species
namely Holothuria scabra. As a result of this the natural populations
dwindled down alarmingly. In order to eiu-ich the natural populations
a Research Project was taken up by the Central Marine Fislieries
Research Institute at Tuticorin Research Centre in 1987 on the
hatchery and culture of sea-cucumbers. Break-through was achieved
in 1988 in inducing Holothuria scabra to spawn in the laboratory for
the first time by thermal stimulation and producing seeds. Since then
several spawnings have taken place and seeds produced. In 1992 the
Marine Products Export Development Authority, Cochin has
sanctioned a Research Project for six lakhs rupees for three years on
intensive seed production and sea-ranching of sea-cucumbers. This
has given a further impetus to the work
EFFECT OF pH ON THE GROWTH AND CHARACTERIZATION OF GLYCINE SODIUM CHLORIDE (GSC) SINGLE CRYSTAL
ABSTRACT Single crystals of semi-organic non-linear optical Glycine Sodium Chloride (GSC) have been successfully grown from three different pH (1.1, 6.0, and 10.8
Experiments on broodstock development and spawning of Epinephelus tauvina (Forskal)
The present paper reports on broodstock development and spawning of the
greasy grouper Epinephelus tauvina in indoor 5 ton capacity FRP tanks in
recirculating sea water system, under controlled conditions. The broodstock was
developed in the culture system by rearing the wild fingerlings, caught in the
size range 90 to 200mm. After attaining maturity, the fishes were fed with
supplementary diet for developing them into mature females. Simultaneously,
a few were administered the male hormone methyltestosterone (MT) for sex
inversion to males. Mature spermiating males were developed by this technique.
A mature female fish weighing 3.85 kg and a single spermiating male weighing
3.25 kg have spawned spontaneously in the same indoor tank consecutively for
two days from 29-10-1998 to 30-10-1998 and also from 20-12-тАЩ98 to 23-12-тАЩ98,
producing approximately 2,50,000 eggs in each spawning. On both the occasions,
the same hormonally sex inverted male has spermiated. Fertilization
rate was over 90%. Eggs measured 0.920 mm with a single oil globule. The eggs
hatched out at 23 hours. Hatching rate observed in the first spawning was 60%
and in the second instance, 45%. Newly hatched larvae measured 1.74mm. After
68 hours the larval mouth has opened and feeding has started
Oil slick in the inshore waters to the north of Cochin Port Channel
The oil samples resembles that of Gulf crude oil and was not seen in Fort Cochin area south of the fairway channel, the oil slick might have caused extensive damage to the intertidal organisms including bivalve spat populations attached to the granite wall constructed to check sea erosion. Strict enforcement of preventive measures is recommended against such oil spillage
Relationship between ultrasound detected tendon abnormalities, and sensory and clinical characteristics in people with chronic lateral epicondylalgia
ObjectiveTo investigate the relationship between tendon structural changes determined by static ultrasound images (US) and sensory changes using quantitative sensory testing (QST), and clinical measures in lateral epicondylalgia.Materials and methodsBoth elbows of 66 adult participants with a clinical diagnosis of lateral epicondylalgia were investigated. Using a standardised ultrasound image rating scale, common extensor hypoechogenicity, heterogenicity, neovascularity, and bony abnormalities at the enthesis were scored, and tendon thickness (longitudinal and transverse plane) was measured by a trained assessor. Sensory measures of pressure, heat and cold pain thresholds and vibration detection threshold were recorded. Pain and function were assessed using the patient-rated tennis elbow (PRTEE), pain-free grip strength, pain visual analog scale (PVAS) and quality of life (EuroQoL EQ -5D). Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to explore the association between tendon structural, sensory and clinical variables which were adjusted for age, gender and duration of symptoms.ResultsA negative correlation was identified between the presence of neovascularity and cold pain threshold (P = 0.015). Multiple regression analyses revealed that a combination of female gender (P = 0.044) and transverse tendon thickness (P = 0.010) were significantly associated with vibration detection threshold in affected elbows, while gender (P = 0.012) and total ultrasound scale score (P = 0.024) were significantly associated with heat pain threshold and vibration detection threshold in unaffected elbows. Heat pain threshold and gender were significantly associated with pain and disability (PRTEE; P ConclusionGenerally, structural and sensory measures were weakly correlated. However, neovascularity and transverse tendon thickness may be related to sensory system changes in LE
Seeding Success through Innovation & Technology: Role of Innovations in Transforming Indian Agriculture
Agriculture remains the most important sector for India, vital for ensuring its food and nutritional
security. From an economic perspective, the sector provides livelihood means to over 58 percent
of the nationтАЩs population, while contributing 14 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
by providing bulk of the wage goods required by non-agriculture sectors, and most of the raw
materials for the industries. The Green Revolution and the transformation it brought about to this
sector helped in easing poverty, and proved that agricultural development has a direct role in
improving the livelihood of the people and the society.
However, despite its importance, various indicators from the sector show that all is not well.
Across the world, the challenges facing the sector are immense: declining natural resources,
smaller landholdings and lesser area for cultivation, erratic monsoons, climate change crisis,
energy crisis, loss of biodiversity, weak extension machinery, rising input costs, inadequate
storage infrastructure, high post-harvest losses, and lack of access to markets. There is also an
urgent need to promote the competitiveness of this sector and gearing up our agricultural systems
including technological aspects so as to meet the pressures of consumer demand and
international markets
A search for fast radio bursts associated with gamma-ray bursts
The detection of seven fast radio bursts (FRBs) has recently been reported. FRBs are short duration (~1 ms), highly dispersed radio pulses from astronomical sources. The physical interpretation for the FRBs remains unclear but is thought to involve highly compact objects at cosmological distance. It has been suggested that a fraction of FRBs could be physically associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Recent radio observations of GRBs have reported the detection of two highly dispersed short duration radio pulses using a 12 m radio telescope at 1.4 GHz. Motivated by this result, we have performed a systematic and sensitive search for FRBs associated with GRBs. We have observed five GRBs at 2.3 GHz using a 26 m radio telescope located at the Mount Pleasant Radio Observatory, Hobart. The radio telescope was automated to rapidly respond to Gamma-ray Coordination Network notifications from the Swift satellite and slew to the GRB position within ~140 s. The data were searched for pulses up to 5000 pc cmтИТ3 in dispersion measure and pulse widths ranging from 640╬╝s to 25.60 ms. We did not detect any events тЙе6╧Г. An in depth statistical analysis of our data shows that events detected above 5╧Г are consistent with thermal noise fluctuations only. A joint analysis of our data with previous experiments shows that previously claimed detections of FRBs from GRBs are unlikely to be astrophysical. Our results are in line with the lack of consistency noted between the recently presented FRB event rates and GRB event rates
